Artwork sizes with frame
If you select a piece with a float frame or classic frame, you might have to accommodate for a few extra centimeters on either side of the canvas.
With float frame
If you opt for a piece with a float frame, please keep in mind that the frame adds about 1.7 cm to the canvas on either side. To get the total, multiply by two (3.4 cm).
Example:
- No frame: 81 x 122 cm
- With frame: 84.4 x 125.4 cm
With classic frame
If you opt for a piece with a classic frame, the frame adds about 1.5 cm to the canvas on either side. To get the total, multiply by two (3.0 cm).
Example:
- No frame: 55 x 75 cm
- With frame: 58 x 78 cm
How to measure your wall
Consider the placement:
Is it above a couch or bed, or will it be a standalone piece or part of set / gallery wall?
Measure the width & height of your wall:
This helps you pick artwork that fits without overcrowding the space.
Try taping the outline:
To help you visualize the size, consider using painter’s tape to create the outline of the piece(s) you are considering.
Tips for different rooms
-
Living room
Art should fill
40–60% of the available wall space or 60-80% of the couch’s length. -
Dining Room
Artwork should cover 50-75% of the table's width.
-
Bedroom
For above the bed, artwork should be about 60-80% of the bed’s width.
-
Office
Aim for 50-75% of the desk's width.
Tips for different wall sizes
Small walls
For a small wall (less than 2.5 meters wide), opt for smaller artwork (e.g., 30 x 40 cm or 12 x 16 inches). Consider grouping multiple pieces together or using a set to create more impact.
Narrow walls
For narrow walls (less than 1.5 meters wide), use vertical artwork or a collection of smaller, elongated pieces. Aim for a height-focused composition rather than width.
Medium-sized walls
Medium-sized walls (2.5–3.5 meters wide) can typically handle artwork in the range of 50 x 70 cm (20 x 28 inches) to 60 x 90 cm (24 x 36 inches). A single large piece or a well-balanced set works well for this.
Large walls
Large walls (greater than 3.5 meters wide) can accommodate artwork 80 x 120 cm (32 x 48 inches) and beyond. You might also consider creating a gallery wall or combining several large pieces for a cohesive design.
Tall ceilings
For walls with tall ceilings (more than 2.5 meters), artwork should be proportionate to the height. A larger, more vertical piece or a set of stacked artwork works well in this case.
Final advice
Eye-level placement:
Hang the artwork so the center is at about 150 cm (60 inches) from the floor.
Spacing:
For wall art sets and gallery walls, keep about 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4 inches) of space between pieces.
